Due to the logistic crisis in the western US port, a large retailer has an emergency before the end of the year.

After serious bottlenecks occurred in the ports of Los Angeles (LA) and Long Beach, which handle more than half of US imports, on the 7th (local time), distributors jumped into 'Container Geddon' (a compound word of container and Armageddon) to secure cargo ships. time) reported by Reuters.

About 60 container ships carrying billions of dollars worth of imports are currently stranded in the waters off the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach without being unloaded.

The disruption of the global supply chain due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and the increase in US imports ahead of the end of the year have resulted in a stagnant phenomenon in the entry and unloading of container ships.

"It's like reducing 10 lanes of a highway to 5 lanes," said Jean Serocar, Los Angeles Port Director.

As the western port's logistics crisis has disrupted the securing of goods, large retailers are struggling.

This is because we must not miss the main seasons of the year-end, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.'
Distribution consulting firm Burton Prekinser estimates that retailers make more than a third of their annual revenues during the holiday shopping season, but 20 to 25 percent of what they have to sell can be tied up unloaded on container ships.

Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, Dollar Tree, etc. are mobilizing chartered ships as a self-help measure.

It decided that it was impossible to put goods on the shelves in a timely manner by relying on global container shipping companies, so it started securing cargo ships on its own.

Wal-Mart loaded chartered vessels into a separate pier nearby, not LA Port, and unloaded them, and Home Depot turned the chartered vessel to San Diego Port to avoid Los Angeles Port, Reuters reported.

Shipping consulting firm Ocean Audit said that "container got money" has taken place in relation to distributors' battle to secure cargo ships, and that retailers are mobilizing all means ahead of the year-end shopping season.
