According to Reuters and AFP news agency on the 28th (local time), the largest volume of cargo volume recorded in fiscal year this year was recorded on the Panama Canal, a global logistics artery connecting the Pacific and the Caribbean.
Panama Canal Commissioner Ricaurte Vazquez said at a press conference on the same day that a total of 516.7 million tons of cargo passed through the canal in the 2021 fiscal year, which ended in September.
This accounted for about 3.5% of global maritime trade, and mainly items such as grain and petroleum products were transported.
It is an increase of 8.7% compared to the previous fiscal year and a 10% increase compared to the 2019 fiscal year.
This is the highest performance despite the global economic and trade stagnation caused by COVID-19, the news agency said.
Commissioner Vazquez said it was the first time that more than 500 million tons of goods had passed through the Panama Canal in 12 months, and evaluated it as "an exceptional year."
The reason for this was explained as the rapid increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation to Asia, the increase in grain imports from China, and the increase in capacity due to the increase in the size of container ships.
In addition, in the 2022 fiscal year, which starts this month, the cargo transit volume is expected to increase further to reach 535 million tons.
