The port of Los Angeles (LA), California, which is experiencing a logistic crisis in the United States due to a port bottleneck, has the lowest cargo handling efficiency in the world, according to a survey result.

Reuters reported on the 20th (local time) citing data from the World Bank and IHS Markit, a global industry research and analysis agency.

According to the data, out of 351 ports worldwide that handle containership cargo, the Port of Los Angeles ranked 328th after Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Dutch Port, Alaska, USA.

The joint first place was held by Japan's Yokohama Port and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Port.

Ports in Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa were included in the top 50.

The US ports in the top 100 were Philadelphia Port (83rd), Virginia Port (85th), New York/New Jersey Ports (89th), and the Port of Charleston in South Carolina (95th).

Reuters reported that Long Beach port near LA Port ranked lower than Turkey's Nemrut Bay and Kenya's Mombasam in the container port performance index released in May.

"California's ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle more ocean freight than any US port, but are among the least efficient ports in the world," Reuters reported.

Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are trade gateways to Asia, handling 40% of the loading and unloading of container ships arriving in the United States.

The two ports are experiencing serious bottlenecks as import cargo surges ahead of the year-end shopping due to disruptions in global supply chains triggered by the corona crisis.

Earlier, US economic media Fox Business reported that the number of cargo ships waiting to enter the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reached an all-time high of 157 as of the 18th.
