An American expert accused of visiting North Korea two years ago and delivering cryptocurrency technology pleaded guilty.
Bloomberg reported on the 27th (local time) that Virgil Griffith, a cryptocurrency expert who worked for the Ethereum Foundation, admitted to violating the IEEPA, a sanctions against North Korea, in the Southern District Court of New York.
The law prohibits the export of goods, services, or technology to terrorist support countries such as North Korea, while stipulating up to 20 years in prison for violators of the law.
The court is scheduled to sentence Griffith, who pleaded guilty, in January next year.
Griffith, who earned a doctorate in computer science from California Institute of Technology, worked for the Ethereum Foundation.
In 2007, Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, developed a program to identify anonymous users who modified the contents of the items, gaining fame.
Griffith was arrested in the United States after attending the "Pyongyang Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference" in Pyongyang in 2019.
